comScore is reporting that long form video views are increasing. Average video length increased from 5.8 to 6.1.

Thinking back on two big events that we livecasted this week-end, the Swedish championship in athletics and the Swedish championship in Starcraft 2, this is natural. As content that previously has not had any home on broadcast tv can now move online there is a large shift of time spent on the long-tail online content. The easiest publication of live content is of course to have the full event broadcasted. We believe that as more and more content owners/producers realize that they can easily broadcast their events online, more and more full-length content will follow. Beacause when you have an event, the cost of producing is really not that much higher for a long form than a short form.

comScore is out with a report called 2012 U.S. Digital Future in Focus. Last year in December 30.1 billion videos were watched in the US, and now the same figure is at 43.5 billion. It is a remarkable growth! The dominant player here is of course Google (YouTube) with more than 50% of the videos viewed. The rest of the statistics is a very fragmented story with Vevo and Hulu coming in at 1.8%.

What is more, average unique daily viewers grew from 73.7 million to 105.1 million over the same time. Also the average video viewing length increased from 5 minutes to 5.8 minutes. This is driven by the willingness to watch longer and longer videos online. At Lemonwhale we have long predicted this to happen and we see a similar trend when we look at the massive interest our customers have had in their longer format shows which are 20 to 45 minutes in length.

There are some interesting facts from the recent Brightcove IPO filing. The main news item is that they expect to sell 5 million shares at $10-12, that equals $50-60M which is significant amount. But then they have also raised more than $100M already.

From the IPO filing we can also se that Brightcove had 3,872 customers in over 50 countries by the end of 2011. The company’s 2011 revenue was $63.6 million, up from $43.7 million in 2010. Brightcove is still not profitable with a net loss in 2011 of $17.8 million (17.3 million in 2010). The strategy for 2012 is focused on investing in better products and therefore will continue to lose money. Antoher things to notice is that Brightcove has 66% of the customers in the US and roughly half of their streams delivered there.

Brightcove is using Akamai and Limelight for delivery. On average they delivered 743 million streams per month in 2011. If we look at the valuation per delivered video stream it is about $290/743=$0.4/stream. It is encouraging to see these numbers as we are increasing our streams rapidly in Lemonwhale. Provided this is true 10 million monthly streams would equal a $4 million valuation!

It’s the start of 2012 and we’d like to send out a big New Year’s greeting to all of our customers. This year is going to be a big one for the online video industry and we’re really excited to see how things will develop throughout the year.
In retrospect, we saw huge moves last year in the video space. In September of 2011, comScore reported that 182 million U.S. Internet users watched online video content for an average of 19.5 hours per viewer. The total U.S. Internet audience engaged in 39.8 billion video views and the online video platform market as a whole increased by 40% year on year. Numbers like these are pretty jaw dropping and it’s plain to see that now more than ever both consumers and companies are hugely engaging with online video.
Looking forwards to 2012, we thought we’d pull together a few predictions for things that we think will be big:

1. Mobile and iPad video explosion – With over 1.08 billion 3G enabled mobile phones in the market today and climbing, we believe we’ll see a massive increase in the number of users who are consuming video content on their iPads, iPods, iPhones and Android devices. We will also see an increase in the amount of traffic on mobile devices that are driven from search engines to site content. More than 70% of the world’s population now has a mobile phone and as these users switch from standard phones to smartphones engagement with video will skyrocket.

2. Web TV re-imagined – We believe we’ll see some big moves by Google TV and Apple TV this year, which will start pulling the web into the living room in a much more integrated way than in the past. For content distributors it will be important to adopt a multi-platform strategy that includes distribution to web-enabled IPTV devices. We also think it’s pretty likely that Apple will release a TV that integrates a set-top-box, display and remote all into one simple package that will redefine how people interact with televisions in their homes.

3. Demand for multi-platform publishing will grow – When content is pushed to the internet, publishers will want their assets to be accessible and browse-able on a large number of devices and platforms covering YouTube, Vimeo, web TV devices, mobile devices, tablet devices and of course, desktop and mobile browsers, which will lead to an increase in demand for fully integrated solutions.

4. HTML5 first strategy will emerge – Due to the above point, the need for video to be served via HTML5 players capable of playback on a large range of devices will force Flash to be used only in the absence of HTML5. Organizations will increasingly prefer to have their videos play in HTML5 players and companies with an HTML5-first policy will become bigger players in markets where previously their Flash-based opponents triumphed.

5. Video in higher education will skyrocket – With the announcement of projects like Apple iBooks and the continued evolution of iTunes U and YouTube for Education, we think this will be a big year for the educational market as more video content than ever will hit students surfing on a plethora of devices. Online video will start revolutionizing education as it will allow students to learn from anywhere and more importantly, at their own pace. Tools that allow universities to easily take content from classrooms, manage and distribute that content to multiple platforms will become increasingly important.

What do you think will happen in 2012?

Apple’s fourth quarter results are good news for the video industry!

The fourth quarter results from Apple were extraordinary. They more than doubled the number of sold iPhones from 17 million to 37 million units. Also, the iPad sales increased rapidly to more than 15 million units. With this fantastic quarter Apple did relatively well compared to the Android community.

At Lemonwhale we are delighted that both operating systems are seeing strong growth. That will increase the possibility to reach out to people with video. Of course we don’t discriminate between iOS and Android so our platform works equally well on both operating systems. You should give it a try!
